FIVB Men’s Club World Championship returns after 17-year hiatus |
Lausanne, June 13, 2009 - The FIVB Men's Club World Championship featuring eight of the world's best Volleyball clubs will take place from November 3-8 in Qatar after organizers signed a new contract to host the event with the FIVB on Saturday. Qatar Volleyball Association President Dr. Abdula Al-Mal, Qatar Ambassador Abdula Al-Dosari, Kuwaiti FIVB Board Member Hamza Al Failakawi, and Qatar Volleyball Association General Secretary Faraj Moftah Al-Abdulla visited FIVB headquarters in Lausanne to ink the deal with FIVB 2nd Executive Vice President Theofanis Tsiokris. "The QVA has received great support from all the Qatari authorities, especially from the Qatar National Olympic Committee, to help make this event a reality," said Dr. Al-Mal. "The Club World Championship in Doha in November will make Volleyball one of the elite sporting events organized by our country. "We will work diligently every day to produce a world-class event that will showcase the best of what Volleyball has to offer. We thank the FIVB for this wonderful opportunity." Qatar initially agreed to host the event last year but withdrew its offer in May citing financial difficulties. While the FIVB entered into talks with other nations interested in holding the competition, Qatari organizers continued to look for backing to support the championship. "The FIVB is very satisfied to sign this contract with our friends at the QVA and we strongly believe that Volleyball will make massive inroads in all Arab countries thanks to this great and important event in Doha," said Tsiokris. The FIVB Men's Club Championship is returning to the international calendar after a 17-year gap. FIVB MEN'S CLUB WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP 1989 - First edition: Parma, ITALY: December 9-10, 1989 1. Lausanne, Switzerland, October 29, 2009 - The Puerto Rico national club champions Corozal left home soil on Thursday to undertake the two day journey to Doha, Qatar for the FIVB Men’s Club World Championships which runs from November 3-8. Expected time of arrival is Saturday afternoon (local time) for the Puerto Ricans after more than two days of flying. Besides Puerto Rico, also participating in the Championships are clubs from Italy, Egypt, Russia, Brazil, Poland, Iran and Qatar. Corozal is composed by Fernando Morales (captain), Henry Escalante, Joseph Gil, Matt Mackinney, Jason Octave, David Menendez, Ezequiel Cruz, Fernando Barron, Dariel Rosario Rolon Harry and Joel Rivera. Injuries plague PGE Skra Belchatow ahead of Club World Championship |
Lausanne, October 30, 3009 -There’s been good news and bad news for Polish champions PGE Skra Belchatow in the run-up to the 2009 FIVB Men's Club World Volleyball Championship, which will take place in Doha, Qatar in the first week of November. The Polish champions got their season off to a strong start by beating Pamapol Wielun 3-1 and Asseco Resovia Rzeszow 3-2 in mid-October. Pamapol is a newcomer to the PlusLiga, but Asseco Resovia finished second last season and its bosses expect the team to be a serious title challenger again this year. “We are quite happy with both matches,” said PGE Skra coach Jacek Nawrocki. “Especially the match versus Resovia, a replay of last year's final, which was very entertaining, and the level was very high, but we are still making too many mistakes. “I expect PGE Skra to play even better,” added Nawrocki, who took over as coach in the offseason after three years as assistant to Daniel Castellani, the new coach of the Polish Men’s National Team. But while the team has got off to a successful start to its league campaign, it recently learned that Michal Winiarski would not return to the lineup until December 15 at the earliest. Winiarski is still suffering from a shoulder injury he acquired last season while playing for Italian outfit Trentino BetClick. “Michal will be excluded from our roster for the Club World Championship, so he will not play against his former club in Doha. We want to give him as much time as he requires to be fully fit,” said PGE Skra President Konrad Piechocki. “In the Polish league we also started without two opposites, Mariusz Wlazly and Jakub Novotny, but they have already resumed training. We hope that at least one of them will play in Doha,” Piechocki said. In the PlusLiga, PGE Skra often plays with no opposite, using three wingers. “Stephane Antiga, Bartosz Kurek and Michal Bakiewicz are clever and flexible, they understand this system. Of course, it is not ideal, but we were forced to play similar to Italian team Piacenza. I am not sure what system we will choose in Qatar,” Nawrocki said. “We are a little concerned about the Golden Formula rule. We have practiced it only two hours a week as we cannot devote more time to it than that. Our league matches are too important for us at the moment,” Nawrocki added. PGE Skra fans are very happy with the form of the team’s two middle-blockers, Daniel Plinski and Marcin Mozdzonek. The duo recorded a total of 32 killing blocks in the first two matches and scored an impressive 98 points in 9 sets. The rising star of Polish and European Volleyball, 21-year-old Bartosz Kurek, scored 94 points for PGE Skra and tops the league statistics. Find all the stats at www.plusliga.pl |

Re: MUNDIAL DE CLUBES - QATAR 2009
Ball jugó la olimpiada con 36 años, y Stanley con 30 años...
Ahora jugarán por ese club: Zenit Kazan... Me gustaría volver a ver a Stanley dejando sin bloqueo a sus atacantes...

Zamalek of Egypt ready to represent Africa in the Club World Championship |
Cairo, Egypt, October 31, 2009 - The Zamalek Volleyball club of Egypt is fully prepared for its first ever appearance on the international stage when it represents Africa in the 2009 FIVB Men’s Club World Championships in Doha, Qatar which starts on Tuesday before finishing on the 8th November. The reigning champions of the Men’s African club championships held last May will finish their last preparation camp in Russia on Saturday before going directly to Doha, Qatar to participate in the Club World Championships. The camp included some friendly matches where the head coach Ahmed Moustafa tested all his squad to put at work his strategy for the Club World Championships. The Egyptian champions added two players - opposite spiker Mohamed Gabal and the middle blocker Ahmed Ali El Sheikh - to their star studded team. The two stars of the Egyptian national team will add a lot to the team that won the African Club Championships in Cairo last May after defeating their arch rivals Al Ahly in the final. Zamalek have four African titles to their name as well as many national team players who won the African Nations Championship in Morocco last month for the third consecutive time like veteran setter Ashraf Aboulhassan, middle blocker Mohamed Ali, and two strong attackers in Saleh Fathy and Mohamed Abdel Moneim. Zamalek will play in Pool A of the FIVB Men's Club World Championships along with Trentino Betclic of Italy, Zenit Kazan of Russia and Corozal of Puerto Rico. |

Los jugadores con altura inferior a 1,95 están comenzando a ser poco común en estas categorías. En Brasil, las categorías inferiores, la altura media de los niños es mayor que la categoría de adultos.

Re: MUNDIAL DE CLUBES - QATAR 2009
Eight clubs dream to win World Club Championships
The competition, which comprises eight teams playing in two pools, will be the first at the world level since Italy organized the last edition in Treviso in 1992. This time, however, and for the first time in an FIVB competition, an interesting new rule, the "Golden Formula" is to be applied. The new rule requires that the first attack for each team after the opponent's service should take place from the back row, in an attempt to produce longer rallies and to give the fans a greater spectacle. Pool A comprises of the European Champions League Champion, Trentino Betclic, the 1st European team in the CEV rankings, Zenit Kazan, the NORCECA representative Plataneros de Corozal of Puerto Rico and the African champion Zamalek. Pool B features the second best European team PGE Skra Belchatow of Poland, Asian Club Championship winner Paykan of Iran, South American champion Cimed of Brazil and the organizer Al Arabi Doha of Qatar. Each pool plays in a round robin format where the first and second of each pool qualify for the semifinal. The first of Pool A plays the second of Pool B, while the first of Pool B meets the second of Pool A as the winners meet to determine the world club champions. Doha offers very favorable conditions, with a fantastic competition hall presenting an excellent environment for viewing good quality volleyball with Italian team Trentino as the hot favourite for the title. In the past four competitions an Italian club has triumphed. Maxicono Parma won the crown in 1989; Massaggero Ravenna in 1991; and Mediolanum Milano in 1990 and 1992. Trentino carries the hope of keeping the title Italian for the fifth consecutive time. “We have the honor of coming here among the best teams from all over the world, but it is difficult to expect to become champions,” said Bulgarian coach Radostin Stoytchev upon the arrival of his team in Doha. “We have two difficulties here. The first is to have a good connection between the older players and the newcomers of this season, and the second is how to deal with the new Golden Formula that we haven't had enough time to train for.” Skra Belchatow of Poland also comes as a big European favorite with a star-studded line-up, although the team will miss their opposites Mariusz Wlazly and Jakub Novotny, as well as key star player, Michal Winiarski. “We came here to play good Volleyball and prove ourselves and if we proceed to the cup it will be fantastic,“ said Belchatow head coach Jacek Nawrocki. The third European team Zenit Kazan of Russia will also present strong competition. Cimed of Brazil earned its first continental title this year and is now competing for the first time to be the best club among the elite. The team is highly optimistic about putting the name of a South American club on the cup for the first time. Organizer Al Arabi of Qatar has added two strong players to its squad, Egyptian setter Ahmed Salah and the opposite Ahmed Salah who just led the Egyptian national team to winning its third consecutive African Nations Championship title in Morocco, thus qualifying the team to participate in both the 2010 Men's World Championships in Italy and the 2010 World League. The host team is optimistic about reaching at least the competition semi-final. Zamalek of Egypt is representing its country at the world level for the first time, after Tunisian and Algerian clubs have had the honour of doing so in the first four editions. “We want to play professional Volleyball as much as we can here, as we know that we will face very strong teams. We will do our best,” said Zamalek assistant coach Mahmud Hassona after his team's arrival. Paykan of Iran is one of the best teams in terms of long-term preparation for the tournament, particularly with regard to the Golden Formula. The team spent three months in Tehran on a training camp before undertaking another two-week camp in Bulgaria. This included six friendly matches followed by another 10 matches in Tehran before the onset of the Club World Championships. “We added five new players to our squad and now have the opportunity of showing our consistency at the world level,” said coach of the team, Alireza Moameri. Plataneros de Corozal of Puerto Rico will represent NORCECA, aiming to proceed to at least the semifinal. The team depends fully on local players, apart from the American Thomas Mckinney, and Jason Octave from Saint Lucia. It will face Zenit Kazan of Russia on the opening day. “We have three players in our squad playing for the national team of the country and have plenty of international experience, but I think our situation is very difficult against the fully professional teams,” commented coach David Aleman, after his team's first training session in the competition hall on Sunday. “I think we haven't yet acclimatized to the new Golden Formula and the few friendly matches we have played with the new system are not enough for us to be able to comment.” |

Re: MUNDIAL DE CLUBES - QATAR 2009
New Golden Formula attracts the media
The new rule requires that the first attack of each team after the opponent’s service begins from the back row, in an attempt to produce longer rallies. Daily newspapers in Qatar media have fully covered the new system and hoping that the Golden Formula will contribute to the total success of the tournament. The “Golden Formula” represents a new ambition from the Volleyball governing body - the FIVB - to maintain the attraction of the sport for fans all over the world. When the FIVB made the historic change regarding the introduction of the Libero position and the rally point system nobody expected these two changes to be so successful. Now the international Volleyball family is hoping for similar success with the application of the “Golden Formula” for the first time here in the Club World Championships in Doha. Meanwhile, the coaches of the eight participating teams have prepared for the application of the new rule but have all said that they need more time in order to fully prepare. The Bulgarian coach of the European champion Trentino Betclic (Italy) said that his team needed more time to use the “Golden Formula” on a professional level because his team was busy with the local league and has not enough time to train for it, although he added that the experience of the players would help them to quickly get used to the new rule. Although Paykan of Iran is the best prepared team in terms of the application of the rule, head coach Alireza Moameri stated that its use during official matches is completely different. “For teams with professional players like those present here, it is easier to apply the new project than the less developed standards and we will see how the players will react.” African representative, Zamalek, has undergone special training at a camp in Russia in order to be able to to apply the new system, where it played four friendly matches. “We had more than seven players in the Egyptian national team in our squad and those stars are able to apply the new rule. However, we need more time because we put our squad together relatively recently due to the other commitments of the national team players for five successive months,” said the coach Ahmed Moustafa, who won both the Egyptian League and the African Club Championship last season with the team. Skra Belchatow head coach Jacek Nawrocki has had a very short time to practice the new system because his team played four strong matches in their Polish League (PlusLiga). “We needed to have more space in the calendar to prepare for such a competition with the new rule, but I think it is the same for most of the teams.” |
